Decluttering for Smiles: Tips on Organizing Your Home & Mind

You may have heard me talk about “Decluttering for Smiles” whether on Instagram, Facebook, or my newsletters. What I mean by this is when we are intentional about decluttering certain areas of our lives, not only are we more organized, but our minds are more at ease, our anxiety is relieved…we smile more.

One area of your home that may need some decluttering TLC at the moment is your bathroom, specifically your countertops and drawers. That is why I’m sharing this with you, and you’ll understand more as you read this post. The item I’m sharing for your bathroom organization is truly a huge overall roll for so many of your needs.

It’s easy to throw all the things in the drawer and close it shut, items getting lost in the depths, maybe never to be seen again. Then, when it does come time to get ready, we open the drawer and are completely overwhelmed and that negative energy can carryover into our day. Not to mention, the time that’s wasted hunting and rummaging to find what you’re looking for. Does this sound familiar?

A few months back, I did a deep clean of my bathroom and I was introduced to these drawer organizers. They’ve helped simplify things so much! Again, you’ll see why I use these throughout my home now.

Let’s take action! Are you ready to start organizing?

1. Checking expiration dates is huge! Skincare and sunscreens don’t have a huge life span so using what we have and knowing expiration dates is important. Instead of buying a ton of different kinds, you can use me as a resource to help narrow products down. 2. Having a place for everything and everything in its place is huge. If there is no space for it, it does not belong. The organizers I shared above are crazy helpful in creating that space. I also have great deeper drawer ones if you’re needing more.

3. Create specific spaces for each category. If you don’t, you will forget that product even exists. Use a label maker, if needed, to help keep track of the areas.

4. Ditch the makeup bag in the drawer and go for more shallow organized container like the link I shared to organize in this newsletter. Those organizers make it so grabbing things doesn’t waste your time and you know exactly what you have, freeing your mind and space.

5. Bathroom hooks and a cabinet above the toilet are great ways to get things to have a space that makes sense. Have a robe? Hang it. Toilet items around the toilet? Put them in a cute case and on a shelf above the toilet.

Your makeup bag. Be honest – how is that thing looking? Is everything bursting at the seams or are you looking to expand? Balance is Key

I want you to envision the things in your life & all the aspects you want to hit or do every single day; is there a balance? How heavy does it feel? Now, I want you to envision a scale – the one where you can put a weight on one side and one on the other – and see how much balance there is. Balance is key!

What if you took all those things you just envisioned & tried to spread them onto the scale evenly – could you do it? First, I want you to pick 3 things you NEED to make a priority out of all the things you said needed to be done in a day; make those 3 things a priority over the others and put them on one side of that scale.

Next, I want you to pick 3 things that make you feel better, breathe better, emotionally stabilize better, or something we talked about last week. Make those a priority in your life!(Something like, a bath, deep breathing for 5 min, or something you feel you’d like for yourself in that moment.)

Now put those all on the scale – the needs on one side, the things that make you feel better on the other. What happens? Is there balance? Did everything just get easier? Balance is key in making it all work out & it looks like you just made it all make sense. Congrats! You succeeded and should be proud of yourself – but what happens when a new day comes and we let life back in, forgetting all about the balance we created?

See, we like to take all those things and put so much pressure on ourselves for them. We try so hard to load up our worries, our must-haves, even all the technology. Let’s talk about the 3 things on each side of the scale that we chose; both sides have the same importance. Did any of those that scale include technology as a must? Did surfing the web come before anything else?

It didn’t. Did anxiety make it on that list? Self hate?

It didn’t.

Do you put so much pressure on yourself that you try to force other things into the top 3 things you want sitting on that scale? If you’re trying to overfill the scale again and again, what happens over and over?

The balance becomes LOST.

Remember to tell yourself this every day when you’re trying to throw something back onto the scale that doesn’t belong there:

“Does this matter more than my top 3?”  (think of the things that outweigh your mind)

“Does this bring value to my life today? Does this thought serve me? Does what I’m thinking about truly matter? Is this important right now?”

If the answer is no, it’s time to balance the scale. More than likely the answer is “it’s not” and you need to keep it away from your much needed balance. Whether it’s negative energy or something that isn’t as important that day, if it doesn’t need to happen, don’t force it to! Have you ever tried anything like this? If you feel a panic attack, anxiety, or stress hitting you, you might get a tight feeling in your chest. One of the best ways to calm down is using breathing techniques. Here’s one that works great! Begin by exhaling completely through your mouth, making a whooshing sound. Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose for 4 seconds. Hold your breath for about 7 seconds, then exhale through your mouth slowly for 8 seconds. Repeat the process as needed, until the tightness in your chest subsides or until you feel calmed!

Sometimes it can be hard to find the good in the bad but I promise it’s so worth it once you do! Laughing and smiling can relieve the stress response and in the long term, laughter can help improve your immune system and mood. When you’re feeling anxious or stressed, distract yourself by simply reading a few jokes, laughing with friends or watching a funny movie! Laughter helps the body release serotonin, leaving you happier and less stressed.

Y’all know how I love my fitness! It has made a world of a difference for my anxiety because there are so many benefits all around. Not only is physical exercise going to keep you in shape, but it’s amazing for your mental health as well. Something as simple as walking can help your body on a daily basis and it’ll leaving you thinking and feeling positive! Walking outside for 20-30 minutes can alleviate and reduce stress as well as give your mind a boost. Exercising boosts the body’s endorphin release and can leave you feeling accomplished and happy!

I’m no medical professional but these are amazing tips that can help you daily and my hope is that it can help someone else. We so often get so caught up making sure everyone around us is okay and we forget to ask ourselves how our own mental/emotional health is. This is a must read for those who love the heart-wrenching true stories of the Holocaust. Recounted by Corrie ten Boom, a member of the ten Boom family, she tells of the families who were hidden during Nazi invasions and the role she played. Due to their help, all of the ten Boom’s Dutch family faced death in a concentration camp – all but Corrie who lived to tell their legacy.

This book has been recommended by so many and is a must read for those who enjoy spiritual journeys and self awakening.
