My Current Haircare, Cut, & Color

Welcome to the hub of all things pertaining to my current haircare routine! If you’re wondering what I’m using as of late in any of my reels, YouTube videos, etc. then you’ve come to the right place. I regularly keep this page updated with what products I’m currently using, how I use them, and why. I’ll make sure to include my daily concoction of products I use, tools I style with, and the brushes I use as well. All those items come together to create the perfect hairstyle!

I’m going to break this down into 3 separate sections:

  1.  Shampoos & Conditioners
  2.  What I use before blow drying
  3.  My styling tools
  4.  What I use after blow drying

I will also be including an extra section at the end of this post with details from stylist Chris Jones and hair colorist Emily Cooper from Salon Bugatti in The Woodlands, TX. Be sure to read through to the end for details on my haircut, color, and more tips to take to your own stylist.

1. Shampoos & Conditioners

Recovery by Virtue – This shampoo is a bit thicker and a little bit goes a long way. I love it but as someone with fine/oily hair I don’t always want this one on my roots so I would say only use it if you tend to have hair that is less oily and more dry.

Tonique by L’ange – This shampoo is tried and true for years by me – great if you have an oily scalp or buildup quickly between washes. It isn’t as thick as Recovery but I like using it on my roots and then Cascade or Recovery from midshaft to ends.

Restorative Shampoo by LolaVie – I came across this one at Ulta Beauty and actually saw it was being promoted by the actress Jennifer Aniston. She’s known for having gorgeous hair of course so I tested it out and I actually like it a lot! I didn’t need a hydrating shampoo since I’m set with the Goldie Locks one but this is a great shampoo to rotate with a hydrating one.

Ultra Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner by Goldie Locks – This is a very hydrating shampoo so if you have oily hair, you may not like using this often. I love that the ingredients are very clean and it does a great job of hydrating my hair without weighing it down!

faq: How Often Do You Wash Your Hair?

I typically wash my hair every three days; thanks to this concoction, my styles last me until the next wash, with a few products in between on day 2 and 3 hair to help control static, oil, etc. When I do wash, I don’t always use conditioner or a deep conditioning treatment – if my hair is feeling hydrated, healthy, and soft, I usually will forego the conditioner but I’ll still use my daily concoction afterwards. These help with frizz, volume, holding a curl, battling humidity, and they provide hydration. HOWEVER if my hair is feeling a little more dry or there’s breakage that I can feel, I will make sure to follow up with conditioner after shampooing my hair in the shower.

2. What I Use Before Blow Drying

Now when I say daily concoction, I don’t mean it literally – just on the days when I wash and blow dry before styling. I’ve been able to train my hair to go longer in between washes so I typically wash my hair every three days and on wash day is when I’ll use my concoction. I love using these four hair care products each time as they each have something to offer when styling short hair or any hair for that matter. Most of the products included are from L’ange and can be found on their website under the Hair Care tab where you can also view other L’ange hair products for different hair types. My daily concoction consists of the following four products:

Link to shop Create 6 in 1 : Create 6-in-1 Styling Cream by Virtue

**Unfortunately I cannot give a direct link to each individual product by L’ange but I’ve included their names throughout this article for you to find the products on their site

Swell thickening cream & Sorbet leave-in balm together offer frizz control, help holding a curl, hydration, and added shine/softness. The Salt & Sea spray provides texture for hair and the Create 6 in 1 Styling Cream is the cherry on top for texture and heat protection.**

One analogy I like to use when talking about hair and using the right products for it is it’s like seasoning your meat. You wouldn’t throw the meat directly on the grill without the proper marinades or seasonings – the same goes for hair! Using the right products before blow drying is going to help your hair hold a curl and helps style to last longer.

3. My Styling Tools

I say tools to style “short hair” because these are what I’ve tested and loved for my own short hair. I can’t say too much for those with longer hair but I will encourage you to experiment and test out products to find what your hair likes as well as needs. Remember that what works for some may not work for others!

There are a few different curling tools I enjoy using and regularly rotate through them depending on the curl I want for the day. Above are all tools by L’ange that I have tried & love for styling short hair whether it’s curling, at-home blowout, or a sleek straight look for the day.

The flat iron I used to use by L’ange is no longer made so I’ve been on the hunt for a solid one to share with you all. One option is a flat iron I recently bought and tried out –  NuMe Tourmaline Flat Iron (click on words for link) if you’re in need of a solid flat iron. The Rootie is a tool I’ve shown on my social channels & tutorials – I like using this to add volume at the root of my hair before styling.

faq: How Do You Keep Your Hair Healthy?

I get asked about how I keep my short hair healthy and truly the answer is I feed my hair! If you keep up with me elsewhere besides just my blog, you’ve probably heard or read my posts stating “feed your hair.” What I mean by this is dig deep and find what your hair needs for styling purposes and always make sure to keep it hydrated. One of the easiest ways to do this is by drinking lots of water and keeping your body hydrated in that sense but your hair will also tell you what it needs if you pay close attention. Your ends may be a little dry or there might be breakage – does it need some oils for hydration or a deep conditioning treatment? Does it simply need a trim to keep things in order? If you listen close enough, you’ll hear what your hair is hungry for!

Aren’t sure which haircare products are right for you? Check out this Healthy Hair Guide I created to help give a bit more direction into finding what products are right for styling hair, maintaining it, and giving your hair what it needs. I also have a L’ange Hair Care Guide I created as L’ange hair products have been my jam for a while and I’ve been able to test their products pretty well over the years!

4. What I Use After Blow Drying

Here are some extra hair/haircare products I like to use in between things, depending on how my hair is feeling. These extras can be anything from pomade to create more separated curls to dry shampoos for battling any oil in between washes. I’ve also made sure to include some products for hold after styling too and the links to shop if you’re wanting to try them out at all. I don’t use these every time I style, it just depends on the day and the look I’m going for.

styling aid: Pastes

Semi-Matte Putty by Atlas – This paste is perfect for men’s hair but can double for women’s hair. It’s quite tacky and can definitely give short hair a piecey look.

Badlands by R+Co. – Badlands is the most unique out of the four pastes above. It’s meant to be a dry shampoo pomade but must be used in a specific way for best results, especially when using it on the roots. I love the gritty texture it adds for the ends of my hair when styling.

Salt & Sea Pomade by L’ange (DISCONTINUED) – If you’ve been with me for a while, you’ll recognize this one as I’ve loved this for some time now. This is probably my favorite of them all for having medium-fine hair and lots of it. I love the tack it has but also the ability to use it closer to my root without making it feel greasy.

6-in-1 Styling Paste by Virtue – This one has a creamier consistency and would definitely keep it at the tips of the hair only. It does a great job of giving the hair a piece-y look without the grit so if you want more soft/less texture in your hair, this is the way to go.

styling aid: for Volume & Hold

Beach Club Texture Spray by IGK – I love this spray for texturizing styles and adding a bit of product to help hair hold its style without feeling too heavy.

No. 26 by Kenra – I’m picky with what hairsprays I use and have tested many, this one included. I think it works great and it does have a super strong hold so keep that in mind if you’re looking to try it out.

No. 14 by Kenra – If you don’t love the super strong hold No.26 has to offer, you might enjoy No.14 more. This hair product has a light hold and won’t weigh your hair down.

Extras Not Pictured

Stardust dry shampoo powder by L’ange – lightweight powder dry shampoo to help styles and hair last between washes.

Tips by Chris: The Cut, Color, & Maintenance

In the videos below you’ll see my stylist, the incredible Chris Jones, giving the rundown on how he cut my hair this time around and why he did it the way he did. This is a great explanation for both you and your stylist! If you’re looking to get this cut make sure to show these couple videos to your stylist and ask for a blunt bob with lightly textured ends but NO layers.

Graduation Guide

I’ve put together a graduation guide below full of gifts that worth the money and that your graduate will actually use as they transition to life after high school soon! I still can’t believe that this time has come and what’s more, I can’t believe one of my own babies is going to be walking across that stage in mere weeks. Where has the time gone?? That being said, I wanted to put together a graduation guide for gifts that I felt would be worth the money and that could be utilized both now & when they head off to brave the big world!

You might remember that I made a similar guide last year, but I wanted to have some fresh ideas that are up to date with what’s trending now and what I’ve found while preparing for my own daughter to graduate in a couple weeks. Whether it’s your own child, another family member or a family friend, if you know a soon-to-be graduate in need of a solid graduation gift, this guide is going to be a big help. There’s great gift ideas for those headed to college, starting a new career, or ready to go out and explore the world!

alt text graduate gift guide

1. All Night Festival bag by LuluLemon – This bag is perfect to wear over your shoulder or across the body, especially when going out with friends to lunch, traveling, etc. It’s the perfect bag for a day on the town and it fits all the essentials needed! It comes in such cute colors and is simple yet sophisticated. This is a gift that can easily be used over and over again.

2. Kodak Mini Wireless Instant Photo – Your new graduate is going to be making lots of memories over the next few years, whether at college, studying abroad, or even everyday life. I considered sharing a Polaroid camera, but I love that the Kodak mini is wireless and compatible with any device to print photos directly from your phone’s camera roll! This makes it easy to print off those memories and add them to a scrapbook or bulletin board.

3. Mini Gold Hoop earrings by JBD – These cute hoops are a favorite of mine because they pair well with just about any outfit! They are 14k gold filled so they don’t tarnish & they can be worn day to day. Mini hoops are perfect for your graduate as they go into the busy adult life. They’ve become a must have in Joce by Design and make for the perfect graduation gift!

4. PURA Smart Home Scents – Some college dorms/apartments don’t allow candles due to hazards, housing rules, roommate allergies, etc. PURA is currently my favorite smart home fragrance device that is perfect for any high school graduate who’s all about scents. Their company even carries popular fragrances like Volcano by Anthropologie and others so your graduate can still have their favorite scents and then some. You can purchase the device and a couple scents to get them started, then have your student replenish as needed at a low price!

5. Tile Mate Tracker – No longer will mom be around to tell them where their keys are or if anyone’s seen their backpack; this is where Tile Mate comes in! Simply attach it to your backpack, keychain, purse, etc. and when your kid is looking for something while away from home, they can tune into the app and find what’s missing. This is similar to Apple Tags, however I love that Tiles will emit a loud beeping noise to help locate the missing items quicker!

6. Airpod Pros – Life after graduation can get pretty busy but one thing post-high school graduates are sure to love are Airpod Pros. Music is a huge part of our lives and whether your kid is headed to college or to explore the big world, they’re most likely going to appreciate a solid pair of headphones to take their music with them wherever they go!

7. Kootek Camping Hammock – Here in southern Utah, the university’s slogan is “active learning, active life” & the students here live by that for sure! If you have a graduate leaving the nest, you probably want them to continue to live a healthy lifestyle. If they’re someone who enjoys the outdoors, they’re going to love this gift! Hammocking is such a fun activity and one that I’ve noticed teens & young adults these days enjoy doing when out on hikes or going camping. This is a great portable gift to have that they can use no matter where they’re headed!

8. Homesick Candles – The name of this company is so fitting & the concept is so creative. I know this one says Texas, but did you know Homesick Candles are available in most if not all of the 50 US states? If you’ve got a fresh graduate leaving home soon, give them a little piece, or rather scent, of home to take with them as they branch out! These are also available in different cities, each one a unique scent representing a different location.

9. Nike Sportswear RPM backpack – In need of a solid backpack after high school that’s going to last years? Here’s one by Nike that has plenty of pockets, zippers, and storage space for the everyday college class essentials. There’s lots of space for laptops, accessories, water bottles, and more PLUS it’s cute & stylish!

10. Apple Watch – One thing I love about Apple watches is that you can track your steps/physical activity throughout the day. It’s also super handy for new graduates who are about to learn what it’s like to multitask in the adult world! They can keep track of their health, notifications, and other apps from their watch.

11. Things They Don’t Teach You in School card game – Have you tried this game yet?? I have yet to try it but have heard good things about it and how funny the trivia is! It’s a bit pricey, but your soon-to-be graduate is going to love the game nights to come with friends and/or roommates in college after graduation. What’s more is when they do visit home, they can bring games along to share with the family!

Minky Couture

I've shared Minky Couture before and yes I am an affiliate, but these truly make for a life-long graduation gift! If you don't have a Minky, you need one because it will seriously last for years to come. It's the best gift for any occasion and I promise your graduate will LOVE it! Give them a hug in a blanket to take with them as they move on into the world & use code JOCELYN45 for a discount!

Facebook Recap

Covid knocked me out good for about a week so I’m excited to be back! Last week I went LIVE on Facebook doing a bit of a Q & A about SEINT makeup. If you have questions about it and are on the fence to get started, the best thing to do is to start with a color match by me for free! Be sure to check out the LIVE from Tuesday and watch the comments in real time to see what people asked as you might have the same questions.

Thursday I talked hair using L’ange and also showed how I style my hair using the L’ange Le Cinq wand set! If you don’t have the Le Cinq, it’s a solid set to have on hand for mixing up those curls. You can create different styles using the different attachments!
